Borsos, Miklós Self portrait with Mona Lisa
Description
One of the most outstanding sculptors and graphic artists of the 20th century was Miklós Borsos, whose art is imbued with the spirit of the Renaissance. After his unsuccessful college admission, he traveled to Florence, Italy to learn about Renaissance art. Although he started as a painter at the beginning of his career, he soon committed himself to sculpture, creating a new, independent plastic world with his marble sculptures, copper embossings and coins from the mid-1930s.
Although the history of art records him primarily as a sculptor, Miklós Borsos also worked with walnut wood and ink, and from 1927 he also made etchings.
One such etching is the Self-Portrait with Mona Lisa, on which the artist sits with his violin in his hand with his back to the viewer. Pepper's gaze meets Mona Lisa, the model of Leonardo da Vinci's world-famous painting, with a mysterious smile "opposite" him.
Pepper’s graphics are not sketchy, dominated by the dynamics of bold black lines. With its dense lines drawn side by side, the artist proves that he is proficient not only in machining the material, but also in making the etching and its technique. The Self-Portrait with Mona Lisa is a masterpiece of Miklós Boros's late era, when the then aging master made illustrations for many literary works.
